I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo...

Happy Mother's Day!

Song for a Fifth Child
Mother, O Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing, make up the bed,
Sew on a button and butter the bread.

Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.

Oh, I've grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue,
Lullabye, rockabye, lullabye loo.
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo

The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew
And out in the yard there's a hullabaloo
But I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo
Look! Aren't his eyes the most wonderful hue?
Lullabye, rockaby lullabye loo.

The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
But children grow up as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs; Dust go to sleep!
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

- Ruth Hulburt Hamilton, 1958
Dear Jack and Logan,
There is no better mother's day gift than getting to be your mother.

I love you,
Dear Mom,
I want to write you something profound and thoughtful and thankful. But there are not enough words to tell you how lucky I feel to be your daughter.

I love you,

  1. Happy Mother's Day to a wonderful mom, daughter and bloggy buddy like Carey!

  2. Oooooh love this poem! Happy mother's day to a lovely mum :)

  3. Tearing up. Great poem and what precious words. Happy Mother's Day Carey!

  4. Please don't make me cry...;)

My mother-in-law gave me a little plaque with that saying {the very last phrase} and I would look at over and over again...and still the time went too fast!

    Happy Mother's Day!!!!

  5. What a wonderful Poem. I'm printing this and putting it on my fridge. Happy Mother's Day!

  6. I've read this before, and it makes me happy (and sad) every time. Happy because I still rock my baby, who is now 3, every day. Sad because I don't know how much longer he'll let me.

    Happy Mother's Day.

  7. Beautiful post. Isn't being a mother just THE COOLEST? How sad I am that my boys are 17 & 13! Growing up is hard for the mom.

  8. Oh how I enjoyed reading the poem...Thanks so much...
I don't have anyone to rock anymore but it was so nice to remember...

  9. Hi Again...

  13. Once of my favorite poems. Thank you for sharing. :)

Yeah! I love comments! Feel free to leave me one (or two or three).
But remember what your mama said..."If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."
