What a difference a year makes...

August 1 was the 1 year anniversary of the girls being home. At some point I will hopefully get it together to write a review of our crazy first year with 4 kids!

In the meantime, here is a little photo comparison:

Day 1 of the rest of our lives...

Earlier this week Scott and I celebrated our 6 year wedding anniversary. I thought I'd take a little stroll down memory lane and show you when it all began...

The morning was so foggy and gloomy but it cleared shortly before the ceremony. We were supposed to be married at sunset but that wouldn't leave enough time for dinner and dancing so our ceremony was in the late afternoon. Here is the site of the ceremony:

We asked a good friend to perform the ceremony. She had to be deputized by the county clerk's office to make it legit.

Our wedding was very small. So small in fact that we didn't have a wedding party. When Scott and I were just best friends we had joked that one day I could be his "best gal" at his wedding and he could be my "man of honor" at my wedding. So when we started dating each other and got engaged it just didn't seem right to ask anyone to fill those spots. We were, and still are, each other's best friends.

Not quite the first kiss as husband and wife but close. My vail was a bit on the long side and had blown around behind Scott.

Our photographer wanted us to walk back and forth and back and forth on the beach so she could take pics of us. We felt so ridiculous and laughed the whole time. (Notice my shoes...I was not joking when I said I wear flip-flops all the time.)

We had a rather long walk back from the beach and man...was my dress heavy! My dad shot this photo and it's one of my favorites.

We had a red velvet wedding cake just because I thought a red cake would be cool. (Though it's worked out well for anniversaries because I can buy a box mix and whip up some red velvet cupcakes for the family.) On our cake table we displayed photos of our parents cutting their cakes on their wedding days.

Happy anniversary to my wonderful husband! The wedding was an amazing start to the amazing life we've created. I feel so lucky to be your wife.

"Not me!" Monday - The "Apologies to Scott" Edition

Nearly every week I write a "Not me!" Monday post. I'm obviously a perfect mother as evidenced by my lists of all the things I never ever do. I thought that this week I prove what a perfect wife I am too.

I did NOT do absolutely nothing for my husband's birthday. He did NOT buy the ingredients and make his own chocolate eclairs. He did NOT have to buy and wrap his own birthday present.

I did NOT take a roll of toilet paper out of my husband's bathroom to refill mine instead of getting a new roll from the closet.

I did NOT find a dirty pan put away in the cupboard. I did NOT automatically assume that my husband put it there (even though I know perfectly well that it could have easily been me).

I did NOT do absolutely nothing for our wedding anniversary. I mean, of course, I would do something spectacular considering all I did NOT not do for Scott's birthday.

When talking to a friend about our wedding anniversary and she asked in what year Scott and I were married, I did NOT say, "2003, I think."

Feel free to leave your condolences to my husband in the comment section...

Oh, no...I didn't it!

This so could have been a "Not me!" Monday post because I can barely believe I was this kind of wife this week. But it's so sad that I thought it deserved it's own post.

Scott recently had a birthday. It was tradition that on his birthday as a child he was given a chocolate eclair. When we got married, I carried on this tradition by visiting a french bakery the day before his birthday and buying him a chocolate eclair (or two) for breakfast on the morning of his birthday.

This year I took slacking to a whole new level for Scott's birthday. I was planning on buying him the eclairs the day before. I swear I was.

But he asked me about it and had decided he wanted to make his own eclairs. So the day before his birthday, he looked up a recipe and bought the ingredients. On the morning of his birthday, he asked the boys to "help" and set about making his own eclairs.

Yes, my husband made his own birthday treat.

Additionally, I had absolutely no plans for the day. But then I remembered seeing a sign about a classic car show happening that day. Men love classic cars, right? So we packed up the boys and headed out.

It turned out to be a nice event...the boys loved seeing the cars and Scott and I loved seeing their excited faces. We had to cut things a bit early. To make matters more complicated, the in-laws were driving out to watch the boys while Scott and I head to the movies to celebrate our upcoming wedding anniversary.

So we headed home, met the in-laws and dashed to a movie. After gorging ourselves on popcorn, Scott and I were rather full. So I didn't bother making him a birthday dinner. Again, classy thoughtful wife, right? For the boys, I threw together an ice cube tray smorgasbord.

As the day drew to an end, Scott motioned to the armoire in our bedroom and asked me to open it. Inside I found a birthday present for him. A present that he bought himself. A present that he put his own bow on.

Yes, my husband had to take care of his own birthday present too.

I guess the very least that I can do is wish my darling, wonderful, loving husband a belated happy birthday!

Scenic Sunday - Our honeymoon

I took this picture on our luna de miel (honeymoon) in 2005. Scott and I spent 2 1/2 weeks traveling all over Italy. On this day, we were in Tuscany in our trusty rented car that we named Romaldo.

We took what we thought was a short cut. Obviously, we were wrong.

We drove for an hour on this dirt track without seeing anyone...unsure if it was best to go back or continue forward. We didn't mind that we had no idea where we were. We were together and enjoying the beautiful Italian countryside.

An Unconventional Love Story - Part 2

This is the second part of how Scott and I met, were best friends and eventually (after 7 years) more. I posted the first part of this unconventional love story on Valentine's Day and as expected, Scott had many corrections which he posted in the comments section. I can't believe I was a whole year off as to when Scott came to visit me at my parents house. The mystery person that he refers to on that trip was my younger brother, Matt. He and Scott never met each other before my brother died...I wish they could have known each other and I know that Scott wishes it even more so.
So here I go with part 2...I wish my memory was half as good as Scott's. Be sure to check the comments section because I'm sure he'll come out of hiding to set the record straight.

______________________________________
About nine months after I graduated college I finally landed a job in "the big city." I lived in the smallest studio apartment ever (from my twin bed I could practically make ramen noodles on the stove!). Scott, too, lived in "the big city" in a slightly larger studio apartment. He worked at an advertising agency with our friend Yael.

After 9 months I ended up landing a job at the same agency as Scott and Yael. We spent plenty of time together as friends...going out to lunch, running errands, hanging out with other college friends. At some point we realized that if we pooled our money we might be able to afford a decent 2 bedroom apartment instead of the dumps we were currently living in.

In December of 1998 (5 years after we became friends), Scott and I became roommates. We found a great 2 bed/2 bathroom apartment and spent even more time hanging out together. Now we went grocery shopping together and bought household stuff together. To the outside world we looked like a couple. But we were just best friends and roommates.

Neither Scott nor I were ever much of daters. I had a few boyfriends during my friendship with him even while we traveled in Europe or lived together. Sometime after becoming roommates (I have no idea how long though) Scott started seeing a girl. One night a group of friends including him, her and me went to dinner. Afterward I was dropped off at home and Scott and his date left to go do something else.

All of a sudden, alone in our apartment, I was struck with severe stomach pains. I thought for sure I had food poisoning. But doubled over on my bathroom floor I started to feeling something else. The green-eyed monster was making me sick...jealousy! I was shocked, flabbergasted, overwhelmed! No...No way could I be jealous...Scott was just my best friend. No, no, no! I must be mistaken. It's simply not possible.

But once I came to terms with what was making me physically ill, I started to feel better. But I had to figure out what to do. Do I say something to him? ("Hey Scott, umm, uhh, I think I like you?!?!?!") Do I pretend like these feelings don't exist? Maybe then they'd magically dissapear?

I was convinced that the girl he had just started dating was already on her way out the door. So I decided to wait until their relationship ran it's course before doing anything. And maybe in the meantime, my feelings would go away.

And I really hoped that they'd vanish. What if he laughed at me if I confessed how I felt? Or more scary yet, what if he thought we should give it a try? We were best friends in every sense of the words and we shared nearly all our friends. If things didn't work out it would be the end of an amazing friendship and very uncomfortable for our friends. It would mean finding new homes and splitting time with friends to aviod each other and being best friendless.

He and the girl stopped seeing each other. My feelings were as strong as ever. Uh, oh!

I've already mentioned how ridiculously bad my memory is so the next part of the story is really fuzzy. At some point I finally said something to him. Quite honestly, I'm guessing I got liquored up to help my nerves.

"Not me!" Monday

The competition is getting fierce for the MOTYs (Mama of the Year Awards). As usual I was a perfect wife and mother (and daughter and friend) this week. Here are just a few examples of my exemplary mothering showcasing why I deserve this completely fictional prestigious award:

In a desperate effort to keep the family from going stir-crazy at home, I did NOT drag them to the beach though it was overcast and 56 degrees.

I did NOT let Logan eat so much T@rget popcorn right before dinner that he threw up as soon as we parked the car at the restaurant. I did NOT then say, "Well, at least now he has room in his belly to eat dinner!"

When writing a post about how Scott and I started our relationship, I did NOT get lots of major a few minor details wrong.

I am NOT ridiculously behind on updating the monthly photo blog I maintain because I'm blogging cleaning the house, doing laundry, washing the dishes and spending tons of quality time with my boys.

I did NOT "pretend" to not hear the boys arguing because I was "busy" writing an email. I did NOT actually think to myself, "Well, it's time they (a three year old and two year old) learned valuable life lessons about sharing and negotiations."

An Unconventional Love Story - Part 1

Happy Valentine's Day!

I thought I'd put it out there...our unconventional love story. I have a horrible memory and I'm embarrassed to say that I've already forgotten details. I can't wait to compare notes with Scott after he's read this...he's got the memory in this relationship...

___________________________________
In college, Scott and I met through a mutual friend. Actually, Yael was one of my two best friends and roommates. She and Scott had just spent sometime in Europe with a small group of other students and became good friends. But when they returned she introduced me to him and somehow I stole him. I didn't mean to. She and Scott remained good friends but Scott and I became great friends.

He was the friend that I did all sorts of random stuff with. We would go to W@lmart at midnight, The Salvation Army looking for Halloween costumes, driving around town looking for something, anything to do, etc.

Scott was a grade higher than me. But after he graduated, he stayed in our college town so we were still able to hang out. After I graduated, I wanted to go back to Europe (I had spent a semester there in college) before I settled down to find a job. Scott also wanted to go back. So we spent a month backpacking through Europe.

On the trip, Scott wanted to see the leaning tower in Pisa, Italy. I had already been there on my previous trip and wanted to visit new places. I tried to convince him that maybe we could split up for a couple of days. Scott is not the most adventurous traveler and the thought of being alone in a non-English speaking country was not something he was comfortable with. But I wouldn't budge. I wasn't going back to Pisa. (You'll need to know this because it plays into our honeymoon.)

Many of our friends, Yael included, thought for sure that we'd come back from this trip as a couple. In fact, after one month with no one to talk to but each other and close quarters, we barely said goodbye to each other at the airport when we got back in the States.

After some breathing room, Scott and I resumed our friendship. Scott ended up moving from our college town to "the big city" and I headed to my parents because I had a difficult time finding a job.

While living at my parent's house, Scott managed to visit me once. He had just had his wisdom teeth removed and was driven up by some friends. They dropped him on my parents door stop and disappeared. Because he was on serious pain killers I didn't know what to do other than drive him around and see the local tourist sites. While driving him on the world famous 17 Mile Drive in Pebble Beach, Scott fell asleep. I didn't know what to do with him so I just kept driving. The lush golf courses with herds of deer, the amazing beaches with huge waves crashing on the rocks, the magnificent mansions, the famed Lone Cypress...he missed it all while dozing. (You'll need to know this info because it plays into the marriage proposal.)

And all the time, Scott and I had a strictly platonic relationship. Lots of acquaintances and even friends assumed otherwise but Scott and I were just best friends.

Wow...this story is taking a long, long time to tell. I guess I'll have to finish it another day... Besides, I'm guessing Scott will have some corrections for me!

"Not me!" Monday

It seems like every week the the MOTYs ask for more proof of my exemplary mothering in order to be considered for the annual Mama of the Year Awards. I provided them with the following list of things I'd never ever do in order to show them that I'm the best candidate for this completely fictional prestigious award:

I did NOT let my kids play in puddle of the dirtiest nastiest brown water because I was desparate to have the kids out of the house.

On our kitchen table, I do NOT have a delightfully unusual centerpiece of kids vitamins, toothbrushes and toothpaste in an effort to remind this mama to have her kids brush their pearly yellows whites ever more frequently. I do NOT need such a blatant reminder for my kids oral hygiene because I'm great a remembering things that are so important.

While taking my boys to school, I did NOT drive back and forward, back and forward, back and forward over the traffic sensor on the road in an effort to get a traffic light to change more quickly so I could get the boys to school sooner.

I did NOT tell my husband that since I cooked FOUR nights straight that I deserved a reward, like maybe going out for dinner or getting take out.

After asking Logan what he wanted to bring to show & share at school, I did NOT laugh out loud when he said "my poop!" I did NOT praise him for going poop on the potty while trying to convience him that poop was not an appropriate thing to show or share. I did NOT spit out some of my drink after he then replied that he wanted to bring his "penuts" (how he pronounces penis) for show & share. (Eventually we settled on a toy car but I did warn the teacher in case he started to pull his pants down during show & share.)

"Not me!" Monday

So, the MOTYs have asked for further proof of my exemplary mothering to be considered for the annual Mama of the Year Awards. (Apparently someone is running a smear campaign against me!) I provided them with the following list of things I'd never ever do in order to show them that I'm the best candidate for this completely fictional prestigious award:

I did NOT make my youngest stand in the restroom at In 'n Out while I paced back and forth wringing my hands freaking out and trying to figure out what to do because I had his poop all down the front of my shirt and he had his poop completely covering his lower half.

I did NOT actually consider asking an employee for a large garbage bag so I could wrap Logan up and take him home nekked from the waist down and covered in poop.

Instead, I did NOT give him a sponge bath in the sink at the restaurant because that would have been totally inappropriate and disgusting. I would NOT have done this even if there was a ridiculous amount of poop to come out of my small son and I could not figure out any other way to get us home.

I do NOT frequently walk around in my bra and pants in the morning while getting everyone else ready. I do NOT duck and run to my bedroom when I realize that my neighbor's window (the one that looks directly into my kitchen) is open.

I did NOT laugh hysterically when Jack asked if we were having an earthquake when in reality it was just my husband's crazy dancing that was shaking the whole house.

When my boys were insisting that they wouldn't take a bath (because it was hair-washing day), I did NOT give them the option of getting hosed off outside. When Logan tried to call my bluff, I did NOT actually start hosing him off on the back porch before he decided he wanted warmer bath water.

I did NOT...oh, wait I can't tell you that one. It was something I actually did do! ;)

100 Things About Me - Installment #1

I enjoy reading bloggers' 100-things-about-me posts. However, by the 32nd thing I usually have forgotten who's blog I'm reading. (Who am I kidding? By #11 I've forgotten!)
I thought it might be fun to try and write one but in the interest of anybody-who-might-actually-read-its sanity I was thoughtful enough to break up the list. In 10 easy installments you can learn everything you ever wanted to know, didn't want to know and could careless about regarding me.

I think it's customary to do this list as your 100th post. My 10th and last installment will be my 100th post (if I can remember).

1. I have ridiculously small feet. In length my feet are a children's size 2 1/2. Honestly, its a miracle I don't fall over.

2. I have ridiculously wide feet.

3. Which is why I ALWAYS wear flip-flops.

4. So it's a good thing I live in sunny Southern California.

5. I hate bats.

6. I secretly love my Honda Odyssey minivan.

7. I not so secretly love my husband.

8. I have to sleep in a bra. (TMI?)

9. I secretly play with my boys' Legos.

10. I've swum with sharks in Belize.

100 Things About Me

In honor of my 100th post, I put together a list of 100, mostly quirky, things about me. In it's original form, it was 10 installments. The final installment was my 100th post, published on April 9, 2009. Here, I have recompiled the list and sorted it into a couple of different categories.

The hard to wrap gifts...

This is a shout-out to my husband, Scott. He now refers to himself as a blogging widow and even with all the extra duties he took on this week (what with my being incapacitated with my latest obsession) he still found time this week to help me out with bloggy stuff.

To Scott:
Thank you for fixing the graphics on my blog though you had a million other things you could've and should've been doing. I never thought I'd say that I'm blessed to have a husband who is a geek by nature and trade.

Thank you for encouraging me in writing this blog and surprising me by buying not one but two domain names which you unceremoniously told me about one night. Sure, you should have saved them as Christmas gifts but as you said, "they were too hard to wrap."

But most of all, thank you for coming home every night from work to this madhouse especially on nights that you know I've made the dreaded veggie and cheese sauce pasta (AKA the crappy pasta).

Thank you for the countless other things you do for our family. We love you.

"Not me!" Monday

For the record, I'm a perfect mom and wife. Just ask my kids and husband...go ahead, ask them. Oh, wait they're locked in the closet busy right now. Here are some examples of my perfectness:

I did NOT "pretend" to not hear the boys arguing because I was "busy" writing an email. I did NOT actually think to myself "well, it's time they (a three year old and two year old) learned valuable life lessons about sharing and negotiations."

I did NOT tell Jack that if he didn't stop whining I was going to pull the car over and leave him on the side of the road.

I did NOT think to myself "that's weird" when Logan told me his mouth hurt. I did NOT point out Logan's drool soaked shirt (almost wet down to his belly button) to a friend and say "What's up with that?" Two days later I did NOT smack myself in the forehead and mutter "What an idiot!" when I realized that Logan was getting his molars in and had been in pain for a while.

I did NOT step over the dryersheet that had fallen in the hallway 15 times before reaching down, picking it up and muttering "Now, why couldn't my husband just pick this up."

I did NOT get so busy writing this post that the boys recorded TV show ended and switched to live TV. I did NOT panic and freak out when I realized they were watching LOCAL NEWS!!!!! (which in our very large city is nothing but a graphic play-by-play of car chases, robberies and shootings).
