Random Bits of Life...The Photo Edition

I think these photos go all the way back to September.  I've been so off and on with the blog that these little bits of life haven't gotten documented.  And because my memory is lousy (at best) I know I better get these memories posted before they fade away...

Random Bits of Life

We've had some changes both big and small lately.  Here is just my way of jotting them down for future reference...

Jack lost his first tooth right after Christmas.  I was late losing my teeth and had most of them pulled by a dentist so I was a little worried at Jack, at 7 3/4 years old, was headed down the same path.  Luckily, it came out fairly quickly after it became loose and didn't cause Jack any problems.  The tooth fairy wrote him a lovely little note and left him $5 spending money and a 1922 silver dollar.

Logan is also down a tooth but this was was pulled by a dentist.  He got a really bad infection and was in a lot of pain.  (Giving that child antibiotics has been the bane of my existence for 10 days now.)  On the upside for Logan, he also got an old silver dollar, $5 and a note from the tooth fairy.

Both tooth fairy notes were written in teeny tiny cursive which, as Jack will tell you, Mama doesn't know how to do thereby proving the existence of the tooth fairy.

I also learned from Jack that he is certain that Santa is for real because on the years we have Christmas at my parents house, Santa is clearly the one bringing presents because my parents don't live near any stores.  Oh, the things they will tell themselves to believe...

Which reminds me of the time I had the boys convinced that for chicken and stars soup, I used a long lasso to pull the stars down to put in their soup.  They believed that for a year or two...

As part of our deliberate 2013, we have gone gluten-free.  It's only been two weeks but it hasn't been as hard as I thought it might be.  I think it greatly helps that Scott is totally on board in participating and being supportive.  I don't believe that any of us have celiac disease.  But there are links to gluten and mood, something that everyone in my family could be helped by.  There are also links between yeast and sinus problems, something I have suffered for 7 years.

GF breakfast has been easy once we found the right cereals though I am missing our waffles.  (I'm on the hunt for a good mix.)  Lunch as been pretty easy because the kids were never huge sandwich eaters.  All four of them are pretty happy taking a green salad to school. After-school snacks are okay too as we've found some crunchy, salty gluten-free snacks that satisfy that craving.  Dinner, which would likely be the easiest for most families is the most difficult for us.  We used to make pizzas and pastas quite frequently.  Now it is a matter of trying completely new things instead of trying to substitute gluten-free things for what we used to eat.

Though it's only been two weeks, I'm pretty glad about how we are doing.

A huge change we made was switching preschool for the girls.  It was an agonizing decision, one we made for a few different reasons.  We loved our old preschool and it was such a part of our family.  I miss my friends and the girls miss theirs too.  But the girls are happy at the new school.  They have each other and they knew one other girl here.  There is a lot more sitting and academics but they are catching on.  I think their favorite part is that they get a morning and afternoon snack...two snacks = two happy girls.  And of course, the snacks are 100% not gluten-free...ugh!  In the long run, having a longer day, being with kids their same age and working on academic skills will be to their advantage.  It also gives me more time apart from them which is a good thing for all of us.

Our last noticeable change was a new token system we started using that has almost completely cut out the amount of screen time (TV and computer) the boys were consuming.  Tokens should be it's own post so more about that soon...

My Favorite Spots

I have several spots that I would consider my 'happy places'.

First off is my bed.  I have had a long standing relationship with my bed.  Happy, sad, exhausted...whatever I am feeling my bed is there for me.  It holds me up...literally.  I read books and magazines, watch TV, nap, get lost on the web.  I could stay there all day...if only my family would let me.

Another happy place is my parent's house because it's the closest thing Scott and I get to a vacation.  My parents help watching the kids and my mom cooks delicious meals and my dad does the dishes.  It doesn't hurt that they have a nice house and an amazing view and a town with plenty of family friendly stuff to do.

It's almost embarrassing to say but Target is a favorite spot of mine but only if I am alone.  I can get a little of this and a little of that.  I can find a nice treat or surprise for my kids.  I can find a nice treat for myself.  I think about all the things the kids need for whatever activity they have coming up...new school year, soccer camp, friend's birthday parties, etc.

Scott and I were married on a Southern California beach and we are very lucky to live close to a few great beaches still. It is a free activity that makes the whole family happy.  Since our family started on a beach and we only ever go there with all six of us, the beach represents family to me.  It's definitely a happy place as there are rarely tantrums at the beach.

Last but certainly not least, there is a park that is very special to the kids and me.  It is a public space but our co-op preschool is located there.  All four of my kids have learned to climb and swing and imagine themselves as pirates or princess on the jungle gym.  And every afternoon when school is done they play and let me have my daily grown-up conversation with moms with like-minded parenting ideas.  Even in summer, like today, several of us meet and let our kids play while we talk.  I was reminded today that I likely only have one more year being at this playground daily.  I will miss it when the girls move on to kindergarten.

And that is my list of my happy places!

Easy Peasy Playdough

For our preschool, I usually make this recipe X 7 but I make it two batches (X 3 and X 4). That allows 8 kids to each have an ample amount of playdough at once.

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • food coloring

Directions:

Mix all ingredients except the food coloring in a mixing bowl with a whisk.

Add food coloring and pour mixture in a large saute or omelet pan. (The color with change slightly once cooked.)

Stir over medium heat until all liquid is cooked into dough.

Remove mixture from pan, allow to cool and knead until smooth.

Store in a plastic bag once completely cooled.

The Graduates

Both Jack and Logan had milestones in June...graduations!

Logan graduated from preschool after attending it for 2 3/4 years.

And Jack graduated from kindergarten, his first of many elementary years.

This is the gift I made (I mean, Jack made, of course!) for Jack's teacher, Mrs. Jung. I'm hoping we see it hanging in her classroom next year and hoping that Logan has her for kindergarten!

Congrats (belatedly) to my two big boys! I'm so proud of you!

More cute pictures...

I thought that title would get your attention! Now that I've lured you here under (somewhat) false pretenses I'm going to ask for a quick and easy favor:

Please, please, please sign this petition http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/ranchocoop/) to save my kids' preschool.

Though our school is housed in a men's locker room (no, really!), the Dept of Rec and Parks wants to charge us $200 a day to use an otherwise unrentable space! They are effectively closing our preschool down with this ridiculous fee. And this school has been so much more than a preschool for my family. For the past three years, the people at this school have been a part of our daily lives. Not only have the boys made wonderful friends, but I have made lasting friendships. I desperately want Logan to be able to finish his last year at Rancho and have the girls experience how wonderful it is.

Please help us save my children's preschool by signing the petition and passing it on. Thank you! Again, here is the link: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/ranchocoop/

All right...now that you've signed the petition, I'll reward you with photos of my adorable kids. For the record, I'm finding it nearly impossible to get pictures of the girls...they are always on the move. And I've always had a hard time getting photos the boys together so imagine trying to get all four in one shot. Anyway, here they are as promised...

Des and Bri found the boys' lightsabers all on their own.

Logan couldn't get enough of the girls so he climbed up in their bed for naptime.

Checking up on the girls at the playground.

My first and, so far, only pic of all four of my beautiful kiddos!
